Planting and Growing Clematis
Clematis are deciduous vines that are ideal for patios and small spaces as they provide an excellent vertical plant solution. Clematis is a well-loved garden classic that is available in various colours and has blooms that vary from tubular, star-like, flat open discs, or nodding bells.
Clematis are easy to grow and, given the proper support, will climb by twining slender stems (petioles) around trellises, walls, fences, pergolas, arbours, obelisks, or poles. They can also be trained to grow on trees, conifers, shrubs, or with climbing roses. Their flowers will attract butterflies and bees and are well loved by pollinators.
Growing Phlox
Phlox is one of the most popular and versatile garden perennials because it works in so many areas throughout your garden. Their long-lasting blooms make them a favourite flowering perennial enjoyed by gardeners and pollinators. They are easy-to-grow, delightfully fragrant, and adaptable plants that the National Garden Bureau named the perennial of the year for 2022.
Proper watering through the summer is key to lush, healthy plants. With the unpredictability of rain, here are general guidelines to help keep your lawn and garden well-hydrated this summer.
Gardening with Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas are some of the most beloved flowering shrubs. If you’re not already a believer, here are some reasons to add hydrangeas to your garden this summer!
4 REASONS TO CHOOSE A HYDRANGEA!
- Most varieties are easy to care for and do well in full or partially shaded gardens.
- Their beautiful blooms are perfect for fresh or dried centerpieces and bouquets.
- They bloom through summer and into fall. Many turn a different colour as the seasons change.
- They come in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes!
Annuals
Annuals are perfect for brightening your garden, window boxes and containers. They provide vibrant colour, shape, and texture to any garden, and with proper care, annuals will provide continuous blooms until frost arrives.
With so many annuals to choose from, it is important to understand the different growing conditions required per plant. Annuals can vary in size, required sun exposure, growing and soil conditions.
Gardening season is here with endless possibilities for creativity with plants. Express your personal style by designing and building your own summer planter. Whether on a deck, patio, or balcony, planters are an easy way to grow your favourite seasonal plants.
It’s springtime and if you started your seeds indoors, you’re probably very excited to move them to that perfect spot in your garden.
But because seedlings are fragile plants, they will need a little time to adjust to a move outside. You will need to harden off your seedlings so they can adjust to an outdoor growing location.
Hardening off is the process of introducing young seedlings to the outdoor elements. This process typically takes place over several days up to a week.
Peonies are one of the hardiest and most beloved perennials. Their beautiful showy flowers can last from spring right through summer, and make for outstanding long-lasting cut flower displays. Their lush green foliage makes them a garden focal point.
Choosing and Caring For Roses
Roses are loved for their delicate beauty, stunning colour, and the fragrance of their blooms. Roses vary in size and shape, from compact shrubs with small flowers to tall climbers with large, vibrant colours; roses make an excellent focal piece in any garden.
As one of the first growers to introduce roses to the region, Sheridan Nurseries is proud to offer one of the largest selections of roses in southern Ontario.
The first entries of hardy roses into the Sheridan catalogue were the FJ Grootendorst red and pink varieties in 1924. Later in 1939, Sheridan trademarked six Hybrid Tea Rose varieties and continued cultivating new varieties well into the late 1940s.
By 1952, people were buying houses in the post-war era, and it was the beginning of the Baby Boom. Homeowners wanted gardens, and no garden was complete without roses. Sheridan was again at the forefront and began offering the newest “All American Rose Society Award Winners” varieties. The Sheridan Nurseries’ collection of roses has continued to grow and expand over our long company history. Today we offer over 60 varieties at our garden centres across the GTA.
